Duy Hai, where the ocean and river meet, was once a quiet fishing village on the banks of Thu Bồn River until space in Hoi An became limited and land more valuable so their fish market was moved here. Now, only 10 minutes down river from Hoi An, Duy Hai is booming.
At first light you can observe the morning ritual and market energy. There are amazing photo opportunities to capture the sun’s rays across the water, filtering through the fish smoking chamber and contrasting beautifully with the lush countryside. You can see the fishermen after their night of fishing surrounded by local women and traders keen to get first pick of the fresh catch for sale in local markets and restaurants. Some women quickly commence drying and smoking their fish while others carry theirs by motorbike to markets in Hoi An for regular customers who keenly vie for the catch of the day. Visitors are encouraged to purchase seafood for their own use.
The local fish sauce company uses the smaller fish to produce their highly prized umami flavoured fish sauce. For this process the fish, water and salt are fermented in large vats for six months.
Large fish are put on ice and driven in trucks to be sold in surrounding towns; smaller fish are dried along the riverbanks and some of the local women remain to clean fish and prepare for the next day’s influx.
For our visit to Kim Bong in Cam Kim Commune we cycle past peaceful rice paddies and fish farms. The village can also be reached from Hoi An by a scenic fifteen minute boat ride across the Thu Bon River.
Kim Bong Village was made famous by generations of artisans who produced incredible examples of wooden ships, furniture, sculptures and carvings. Today local tradespeople still create fascinating products and use the ancient skills to restore the centuries-old buildings. Be sure to cycle around the village and explore the surrounding landscape, discover beautiful waterways, view the agriculture and the local people as they go about their daily tasks.
